Knots, lashings, hitches, whippings
Material life means activities twined by the influence of three modes or Gunas. Guna means rope that binds the living entity to matter. A rope is a thick strong cord made by twisting together strands of coconut, hemp or sisal fibers. So, ropes could be put to best use by using their ‘binding’ principle for practical purposes.
Knots are made to bind two ropes; lashings bind two sticks; hitches bind a stick and a rope; whippings ensure the ends of the rope don’t get loosened. In village life these knots are put to use in agriculture, for tying animals, tree climbing, fastening, in constructions and etc.
Students at the Varnasrama College learnt different knots, hitches and lashings and also put them to use in construction and other activities.
