A day in the life at Vedic Eco Village:
Start your day in a serene environment which supports self-regulation and deeper sadhana.
Answering nature's call: maintaining personal hygiene off-grid involves extra steps and preparation. Outhouses and composting toilets. BYOTP. The eco village does not provide paper products, rather we encourage everyone to learn natural, sustainable, and cleaner habits. Consider familiarizing yourself with water washing, using a lota (water vessel) before your arrival.
Bathing: water for bucket bathing can be heated on the stove during cold months, and in the warm months, water captured the night before allows for a cool (not freezing cold) bath in the morning. Solar showers provide warm - hot water by midday, and for as long as the sun is shining. We ask that only natural soaps are used, as the greywater directly flows into the ecosystem.
Morning fire: provides bath water and starts the daily cooking program, while heating the place. This applies to the cold and transitional times of year, before we start cooking outside on the chulha. Tending fires is a great meditative practice and an essential life skill.
Morning program: Everyone has time to themselves each morning for personal sadhana practices, and there is also the opportunity to come together for a morning program of kirtan and reading scriptures.
Breakfast: consisting of seasonal fruits, and grain preparations. Ingredients are available for individual preferences.
Daily duties: Anyone staying at the eco village will be spending time in one (or more) of three places every day: forest, garden, and kitchen.
Forest: Collecting firewood, cutting trees, building berms, moving logs, milling, chopping wood
Garden: Preparing beds, planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, seed saving, drying
Kitchen: Fire tending, food prep, cooking dal, grains, subji, sweets, baking, heating water
Goseva: Those experienced or interested in caring for cows can find engagement with our local Gir cows. Brushing, feeding, watering, hoofcare, dung and urine collection, hosting pilgrims, and running fires in winter to keep them warm. The ox team is ready to work in agriculture, plowing, hauling logs and transportation. Building infrastructure for cows, including goshalas and fencing is ongoing.
Green building: Our efforts to expand our facility involve building cubes, chulha mass heaters, cob ovens, wattle and daub, clay slip straw walls, natural plasters, water catchment, living roofs, thatch, mud floors, woodworking, and aligning with principles of Vastu. We welcome anyone with experience to teach us, and anyone willing to learn.
Evening: After the midday meal, the day is open for continuing projects, taking care of personal chores like laundry, unwinding and preparing for the next day. This is the time for soaking grains and pulses, meal planning, and cleaning. After an evening program, we are early to bed, early to rise.
